Yoga itself is considered equal to Samadhi. When mind gets stable , the status is Samadhi.
Maharishi Patanjali has defined Samadhi as under:
TADHDEVADHMATRA NIRBHASAM SAWRRUPSHUNYAMIV SAMADHI
Samadhi is state when you yourself becomes zero and the whom you are concentrating is magnificent. Dhyana is secondary and the object you are concentrating becomes supreme. The feeling, that I am doing Dhayana and the belief in processes of Dhayana and there remains only the Dhayana and the object you are concentrating, that is true state of Samadhi. The area of Samadhi is very wide. In Yog Darshan, Samadhi is classified in two parts:
- Sam Pragyat
- Asampragyat

VIRAMA PRATYAYABHYASPURNA SANSKAR SESHONYA (Yog 1/18)
ASAMPRAGYAT SAMADHI is a state of mind when senses of mind is completely healthy and there remains only moral values, It is of two kinds:
- BHAV PRATAYA ASAMPRAGYAT SAMADHI
- UPAYA PRATAYA ASAMPRAGYAT SAMADHI
SHRADHAVIRYASMIRITISAMADHIPRAGYAPURVASAMPRAGYAT (Yog 1/20)
The Yogies, when doing Yoga with full devotion, enthusiasm, remembrance of old experiences and with Ritmbhra Pragya, they get UPAYA PRATAYA ASAMPRAGYAT SAMADHI.
First four are SABIJ SAMADHI.
In the last two ASAMPRAGYAT SAMADHI, when the sanskar of Samadhi Pragya are debarred, it is called NIRBIJ SAMADHI.
METHODS TO ACHIEVE SAMADHI
- KNOWLEDGE & ENLIGHTENMENT: Illiteracy and ignorance are for binding, Knowledge and enlightenment are means to freedom. ACHIEVEMENT OF KNOWLEDGE & ENLIGHTENMENT: TATVAABHIYASSANTITI TAYAGAD VIVEK SIDHI ( Sankhya a. 4)Knowledge & Enlightenment is achieved by accepting existence of God and encounter Him through practice of Yoga and realizing that this body, and related things are not for ever, one gets Knowledge and enlightenment
- VARAGYA; DRISHTANUSHRIVIK VISHYAVRITRISHNASAYA VASHIKAR SANKHYA VARAGYAM:To be indifferent to the seen sights or heard subjects , is called Varagya.
- ABHYAS; TATRA STHITO YATNOABHYAAS (Yog 1/13)The efforts done for stability and purity of mind is called Abhyaas.
- TIVRASAVENGANAMASNA (Yog 1/21) Highly sensitive people get fast benefits from Samadhi.
- ISHWARPRANIDHANAD WAThe full devotion to God and right determination enable fast progress towards Samadhi.
- TAPA SAWADHYAYASHWARA PRANIDHANANI KRIYAYOGA (Yog 2/1)Tapa, Swadhyaya (introspection) and surrender to God are good for Samadhi.
